Since is water the predominant ingredient of beer, its source and its characteristics affect greatly the character of the beer. All beer styles are influenced by the characteristics of water found in the region. Although the effect of minerals in brewing water is complex, hard water is normally better suited to dark beers, while soft ware is more suited to light varieties.
